We’re staffed with a higher caregiver-to-resident ratio than your typical assisted living community. We take pride in our integrated environments, offering a full spectrum of services and resources with an emphasis on dignity and self-determination. Each of our licensed care communities can accommodate those needing assisted living and assisted nursing care, allowing our Members to remain in their apartment homes as their needs evolve, including those living with cognitive changes.

The Terrace and The Metcalf
The Terrace at Terwilliger Plaza is a licensed assisted living facility and The Metcalf at Terwilliger Plaza is a licensed residential care facility. We have a licensed charge nurse on-site 24/7, and a staff that is supervised by a registered nurse care manager and our Director of Assisted Living.

What is an Assisted Living facility?
The term ‘facility’ is rather outdated and doesn’t aptly describe the home-like, comfortable environments that Portland retirement communities such as Terwilliger Plaza senior living have to offer. In addition to housing, health care, personal care services and assistance with activities as needed, community Members are encouraged to maintain maximum independence. Memory care services are also available at many communities that offer assisted living, as both are designed for long-term care.
What does Assisted Living provide?
These types of supportive living environments are designed to address all Member’s primary needs, including meals and quality of life enrichment programs. There are typically semiprivate, shared and private housing spaces that can be furnished or unfurnished. Dining programs are available for those who don’t care to cook or who enjoy eating out with friends and neighbors. Getting out to socialize or going sightseeing is often easier thanks to transportation arrangements and organized off-site recreational activities, all handled by the community.
In Terwilliger Plaza’s assisted living community in Portland, as well as many other communities, you’ll find these top amenities:

Does Medicaid pay for Assisted Living?
While Medicare doesn’t cover costs associated with assisted living, state- and government-sponsored Medicaid programs for low-income families will cover some portion of these expenses. The key is that no portion of the living expenses and personal care amid a care community are covered. However, Medicaid does care qualified expenses for:
- Doctor visits and exams
- Medical assessments and testing
- Case management
- Nursing care
- Medication management
Medical care for those with dementia related conditions are also covered, but there is no level of Medicaid coverage for living costs or custodial care in assisted living.
What is the difference between Assisted Living and nursing homes?
A primary difference between assisted living and nursing homes involves the level and type of care provided by each. Nursing home residents tend to need full-time care and monitoring, as they often have more complex health problems that necessitate skilled medical providers or respiratory services. In contrast, assisted living communities cater to those who can live at a higher level of independence with moderate medical needs. It’s an ideal place for those with mild to moderate memory loss or who have mobility issues. One will notice a difference between the appearance of a more institutional and basic nursing home and a homelike assisted living community that offers apartment-style living quarters with greater privacy.
