Self Governance
Welcome to independent living that’s actually independent.

Terwilliger Plaza is one of only a handful of self-governed continuing care communities in the nation. Which means? You have a voice, a vote, and a way to affect change. Started in 1962 by the Retired Teacher’s Association, Terwilliger Plaza has always been an independent place for independent people. Here’s how it works.

Floor Representatives

  • One per floor
  • Regularly scheduled meetings to stay informed
  • Member ideas come here first

Resident Council

  • Consists of the floor representatives
  • Meets once per month
  • Meetings broadcast on in-house TV
  • Agreed-upon issues go directly to the board

Finance Committee

  • Includes board members and other Plaza members
  • Manages the investment portfolio
  • Monitors the Plaza’s financial activities

Board of Directors

  • Chair and Vice Chair are members
  • Majority are Plaza members
  • Everyone gets a vote
  • Meets monthly
  • Determines policy

Our board is the opposite of bored.

A majority of the board of directors are members of Terwilliger Plaza, as stated in the by-laws. They’re elected by their peers, rule on policy, and affect change right where they live. But the board also includes local professionals who lend their business savvy and expertise. From committees to councils to the board, itself, this is a wonderful way to get involved in life at the Plaza. Meet our board members, here.
