’Tis the Season! From the annual Sock Drive to the Christmas Ships, ZooLights to shopping local, there are plenty of ways to spread the love and feel the joy this holiday season. Here are a few of our favorites. Join us!
1: Night Lights. Nothing says the holidays are here like a festival of lights! Check out the infamous Peacock Lane, a Portland neighborhood full of Tudor houses that’s been decorating for Christmas for decades. If animals are more your style, visit ZooLights at the Oregon Zoo.
2: By Train or by Ship. Get on board vintage rail cars with Santa and his elves and take a ride from the wilderness into the heart of the city. It’s The Holiday Express! And don’t miss the Christmas Ships Parade. Started in 1954, this Portland tradition contains around 55 brightly decorated ships, seen on both rivers.
3. Shop Local. One of our favorites isn’t actually shopping, it’s the annual holiday display at Pittock Mansion – A Very Portland Christmas. Volunteers transform the mansion into a holiday wonderland featuring some of Portland’s most iconic people, places and events. There’s also the Portland Saturday Market, a great way to get hand-crafted gifts from the Northwest.
“For us, it couldn’t be Christmas without music. Music permeates gatherings with family and friends” — Colleen & Tom Foster
“Tree cutting with as many of the family as can make it. And having the family for Christmas eve dinner. With my great apartment I can still do it.” — Merry Emlaw
“I really like singing Christmas carols with a group. I also love to see the wonder in the eyes of little children when they see a lit up Christmas tree, especially when it is their first time.” — Shirley Holland
