Frequently Asked Questions

We've gathered together some commonly asked questions about life at Terwilliger Plaza and our operations. If you find that your question hasn't been answered below, just ask us!

Q. What is Terwilliger Plaza?
A. Terwilliger Plaza is a "Continuing Care Retirement Community" or CCRC. The Plaza is nationally accredited with the Continuing Care Accreditation Commission and was established in January 1962. Our downtown high rise community offers a variety of retirement residences, recreational and social activities and extended care services. The Plaza features over 200 apartments in a variety of styles and views. Membership at Terwilliger Plaza includes access to the Terrace enhanced assisted living facility and the Metcalf Residential Care facility.

Q. Who operates Terwilliger Plaza?
A. The Plaza is a non-profit 501(C)-(3) corporation in the State of Oregon and one of very few self-governed retirement communities. Our members serve as a majority on the Board of Directors. They also present a strong voice through Resident Council and other committees that actively contribute to the superior quality of life.

Q. What are the entrance requirements?
A. Prospective members must be a minimum of 62 years or older at the time of residency. Prospective members complete an application form to be submitted with their application fee (this amount depends on the apartment selected). Upon approval, the application fee is applied in full to the membership fee.

Q. How large is Terwilliger Plaza?
A. The Tower is a 12 story building located in the heart of downtown Portland. There are over 200 apartments in the Tower, 48 apartments in the Heights, 44 apartments in the Terrace Assisted Living and 29 apartments in the Metcalf Residential Center.

Q. What are the financial obligations?
A. Membership at the Plaza includes a one time membership fee paid in two parts. The application fee is a percentage of the total membership fee and is paid at the time you apply for residency and reserves your apartment for up to 90 days.

The balance of the membership fee (less the application fee) is paid when you move in. Your monthly maintenance fee also begins at this time and provides for a long list of essential services as well as access to recreational, social and wellness opportunities.

Q. What is the membership fee and how much is it?
A. The membership fee is fee paid to become a member of Terwilliger Plaza. It also provides you with access to the health services in the Terrace and Metcalf facilities. The membership fee is based upon the size, location and view of the apartment you choose.

Q. Is any portion of the membership fee refundable?
A. Yes. Terwilliger Plaza's refund policy is simple. If you occupy your apartment less than 40 months, there is a refund available to you or your estate. This amount is pro-rated. For example, during the first 6 months, should you leave the Plaza or pass away, you would receive the balance of the membership fee less the application fee. After 6 months, the refund will diminish at 1/40th per month, beginning with your first month of residency. After 40 months your membership fee is vested in Terwilliger Plaza and provides for our lifetime commitment to all members.

Q. What do I receive for the monthly service fee?
A. The monthly services fee provides you with the full maintenance of your apartment at Terwilliger Plaza. Payment of this fee ensures delivery of a long list of essential services. These include: heating and air conditioning, electricity, sewer, water, trash, local phone service, cable television, housekeeping twice per month, weekly personal linen service, free laundry facilities, scheduled transportation, 24 hour nursing staff, emergency off-hook system and access to all recreational, social programs and wellness opportunities.

Q. How large are the apartments?
A. Terwilliger Plaza has a variety of styles and sizes of apartments. Call us to discuss availability and waiting lists for some apartment styles. You can also view floorplans for The Terrace and The Heights.

Q. Do I have any choice in how my apartment is renovated?
